Jan 02 – Eighteen teams take part in the international ice sculpture festival in Yekaterinburg.
The Russian city of Yekaterinburg has welcomed in the New Year with its annual ice sculpture festival. For five days the cities central square was turned into a building site as international teams got to work creating their entries. The festival, which will last from New Year till the Orthodox Christmas on January 7 this year, has a special theme – the East. This was reflected in the most popular choice of sculpture. This year only two people could be part of each team and all teams had to use the same tools. The artists were helped by favourable weather conditions. It was sunny and the temperature was below zero, but not extremely cold. By the opening day Yekaterinburg central square was filled with exotic animals, dragons and Eastern gods and goddesses. The winner of the festival will get a prize of 160,000 roubles (about 5,500 dollars USD).
