Russia to USA: ‘Don’t tell us whom we should be friends with and whom we should sleep with’
July 30, 2008
Relations between Moscow and Washington may seriously aggravate after the presidential election in the United States. Furthermore, an anonymous source at Russia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said that the relations between the two countries may virtually come to nothing, Interfax reports.

“We are ready for any development of the situation,” a source from the ministry told reporters Tuesday. The source added that Moscow may afford not to maintain relations with any partners, if the latter desire so.
The above was the reaction of the anonymous source from the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Russia to recent remarks from Republican John McCain, who stated that the USA must take a tougher stance on Russia and exclude the country from the Group of Eight.
The source also said that the USA had put its relations with Russia to test.
“Everything is fine until we are told how we should behave, whom we should be friends with, whom we should sleep with and whom we should turn out of doors. At the end of the day, we are not going to baptize children with them, we have others whom we can communicate with,” an anonymous Russian diplomat said.
Russia does not exclude that Moscow may stop conducting negotiations with the USA regarding the questions, which Washington is particularly interested in, ITAR-TASS reports with reference to the unnamed source at Russia’s Foreign Ministry.
“We can reach the point when we can end discussions of the questions, which America is interested in,” the official said.
The Russian administration believes that the United States may soon suffer from a serious political crisis, the diplomat believes.
“America is standing on the verge of a large-scale crisis of its own existence,” the source said. “They will first need to learn how to live within means,” the Russian diplomat said.
“We are not enemies with the United States, and unfortunately, we have not become friends either. However, we depend on each other a lot less than we did before,” the diplomat added.
Russia has problems with the American government, not with the American nation, the official pointed out. “We have problems with American ideologists who impose such foreign politics of the United States,” he said.
As for the forthcoming presidential election in the USA and the development of further relations with Russia, the source said that Moscow was ready for any development of the situation.
“McCain needs to become the president first so that we could start listening to what he says. The same refers to the second runoff, Obama,” the official said

The opening of the center for surrogate mothers in Poland has sparked controversy. The Catholic Church stands strong against the initiative, although many Polish citizens support the opening of the first-ever center in the country. The center has already released the price list for its services and even obtained its first clients, the Noviye Izvestia newspaper reports.
|
||||||||
|
|
||||||||
Thirty-seven women have already addressed to the center offering their healthy bodies to help those who cannot enjoy the happiness of biological parenthood. Specialists of the center pay first priority to addresses of surrogate mothers and infertile couples so that a surrogate mother would not come across her child in the streets afterwards.
The price list of the center says that the price of child-bearing will fluctuate between 15,000 and 22,500 US dollars. The list also says that the prices of happy parenthood are negotiable.
Surrogate mothers are obliged to undergo a series of profound medical examinations, which include tests for genetic diseases. In addition, the women will have to provide special medical certificates to prove that none of their relatives suffer from any genetic diseases either. To crown it all, they undertake not to drink alcohol or smoke tobacco during pregnancy.
Potential parents in their turn must guarantee that they will adopt a baby in any case, whether it is born as a healthy baby or not. A surrogate mother also undertakes not to have any claims after the birth of a baby: a woman signs a 70,000-dollar promissory note which is deposited at the center until the baby is delivered to adoptive parents.
Surrogate motherhood has become a subject of vivid discussions in Poland recently. Recent opinion polls conducted in the country showed that the majority of the Poles approve the initiative, although the Catholic Church vehemently opposes it. Clergymen believe that it is not a surrogate mother, but God, whom childless people need to address with prayers.
Organizers of the center say that they decided to take up the initiative because of the serious demographic situation in Poland. To make matters worse, about 1.5 million Polish families cannot have children.
The parliament of Poland does not seem to be able to pass the law about artificial fertilization, hesitating between the official stance of the Roman-Catholic Church and the need to help citizens of Poland.
Having another woman bear a child for a couple to raise, usually with the male half of the couple as the genetic father, is referred to in antiquity. For example, chapter 16 of the book of Genesis relates the story of Sarah’s servant Hagar bearing a child to Abraham for Sarah and Abraham to raise.

Islamic Ummah should materialize message of Mab’ath
July 30, 2008
The Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei called perseverance in all circumstances as the great lesson of the glorious Prophet’s Mab’ath (the appointment of Prophet Mohammad as messenger by Allah).
“The great Iranian people by relying on this decisive lesson and by powerful attendance in the fields and arenas of confrontation or cooperation and dialog continue their bright way,” stressed Ayatollah Khamenei in a meeting with the system’s officials, different groups of people and the ambassadors of Islamic countries Wednesday morning.
Ayatollah Khamenei felicitated the Iranian people, the great Islamic Ummah and all seekers of right and freedom on the occasion of Mab’ath calling necessary the learning of lessons by the Islamic Ummah from Mab’ath as a glory memory of human history.
“Islam’s great Prophet in the petrified and stone-like atmosphere of Jahilia (period of ignorance before the emergence of Islam) turned a society empty of science, justice and ethics into an exemplary society and government based on monotheism, science, justice, logic and ethics,” added Ayatollah Khamenei.
The Leader of the Islamic Revolution called resistance and firmness, deep knowledge and the Holy Prophet’s adherence to Islam’s path and goal as the most important factor for this strange and history-making change.
“The Prophet’s perseverance, not fearing, not being greedy and not being deceived by the enemy’s concessions caused the roots of perseverance, calm and confidence to strengthen in the hearts of the limited number of Muslims and that small number with their resistance against toughest circumstances including the very hard period of siege in Abi Talib Valley (near Mecca) to overcome the enemies and form an exemplary society,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.
He termed adopting true stance toward progress as necessary but inefficient and said: “according to the divine tradition, trueness prevails when its followers show strength and resistance in all circumstances and situations.”
The Leader of the Islamic Revolution called the true meaning of the Holy Quran’s verse”Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those with him are firm of heart against the unbelievers, compassionate among themselves…” as strength and steadfastness in all fields, pointing to the incidents of the Holy Prophet’s life and said: “the Prophet of Islam was the symbol of strength in the battlefield and in time of dialog with the enemies was also full of strength and resistance.”
He strongly advised people especially the youth to precisely study the all-lessons life of the Holy Prophet of Islam, adding: “Imam Khomeini by making use of this generous spring and following the Prophet’s faith and resistance started the great Islamic Revolution and movement and Iran’s great people in the light of his (Imam Khomeini’s) perseverance entered the field and with God’s help toppled one of the most dependent governments of the world and raised the flag of Islamic awareness in the very sensitive region of Middle East, and with their resistance spread the waves of Islamic awareness among nations.”
Pointing to arrogant powers’ enormous but failed effort to weaken the resistance of the Iranian people and the Islamic system, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution said: “Iran’s great people, against the will of all bullying powers of the world still support the oppressed people of Palestine and strongly condemn the shameful and scandalous silence of the pretenders of freedom and human rights in front of the Zionists’ injustice and daily crimes.”
The IR Leader also said the American President George W. Bush’s support for the murderer and terrorist Zionists is in brazen contradiction with his claim of support for freedom adding that “Iranian nation is awake and fully understands the facts.”
Recalling bullying and ambitious nature of the world arrogance, Ayatollah Khamenei said, “Backing down one step in the face of the arrogance will encourage it to come one step forward. The idea, that retreatment and giving up right stances and words will make the arrogance change its policy, is totally wrong and baseless.”
Ayatollah Khamenei called the word of monotheism and unity as the main message of the Iranian people’s resistance, adding: “the Iranian people is only God’s servant, not the servant of America, the arrogant powers and the Abu Jahls of the time.”
Terming nuclear bomb producers and the ones threatening mankind’s security and calm as “Abujahl” (ignorant persons) in today’s world, Ayatollah Khamenei said, “The present time Abujahls (ignorant persons), who only look at their arms and roar like foolish hooligans, do know that Iranian nation pursues nuclear energy for electricity generation.
“They (the west) however claim that since such a work gives you power, we will not allow you to pursue it,” IR Leader added.
Ayatollah Khamenei said Iranian nation’s present capability, and regional influence and strength cannot be compared with the past.
“A bright horizon is ahead of dear Iran; we do know what we do and where we will get. We think that reaching to the point needs movement and perseverance and not standing idle or moving backward.”
Ayatollah Khamenei said that today, Muslims should be wise enough and upgrade their knowledge standards and try to fully materialize the message of Mab’ath.

A robotic ‘love story’
July 30, 2008
A robot that relaxes when stroked and cuddled mesmerises another that loves human faces.
The University of the West of England’s David McGoran takes his Heart Robot on a touchy feely tour, while Matt Denton of Micromagic Systems explains how his facial recognition robot works.
But the question they both want answered is how will they react to one another?

Canadian Arctic sheds ice chunk
July 30, 2008
A large chunk of an Arctic ice shelf has broken free of the northern Canadian coast, scientists say.
Nearly 20 sq km (eight sq miles) of ice from the Ward Hunt shelf has split away from Ellesmere Island, according to satellite pictures.
It is thought to be the biggest piece of ice shed in the region since 60 sq km of the nearby Ayles ice shelf broke away in 2005.
Scientists say further splitting could occur during the Arctic summer melt.

The polar north is once again experiencing a rapid ice retreat this year, although many scientists doubt the record minimum extent of 4.13 million sq km (1.59 million sq miles) of sea-ice seen in 2007 will be beaten.
Nonetheless, dramatic changes are occurring in the region, affecting the ice both in the open ocean and the ice which is attached to the coast.
Researchers had predicted that the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf (WHIS) was likely to experience a major calving event of this nature.
Scientists travelling with the Canadian armed forces visited the area recently and found major new fractures in the ice that stretched for more 16km (10 miles).
Ellesmere Island was once bounded by one giant ice shelf that covered almost 10,000 sq km (3,500 sq miles).
Now this expanse of ice has retreated into a string of much smaller, individual shelves, which together cover just under 1,000 sq km (400 sq miles). At 440 sq km (170 sq miles) in size and 40m (130ft) thick, the WHIS is the largest of the remnant shelves. Scientists have been studying the Canadian feature because of what it can tell them about Arctic history.
Radiocarbon dating of drift wood trapped behind the shelf in Disraeli Fjord shows the shelf itself has been in place for at least 3,000 years.
However, an analysis of past records suggests that since the early 20th Century, the ice that makes up the WHIS has retreated by about 90%.
Researchers believe the mechanism which has maintained its stability – fresh water coming out of Disraeli Fjord and freezing under the shelf – may have been disturbed. If that is the case, the rest of the WHIS may disappear quite rapidly, researchers say.
Loss of sea-ice in the Arctic has global implications. The “white parasol” at the top of the planet reflects energy from the Sun straight back out into space, helping to cool the Earth.
Further loss of Arctic ice will see radiation absorbed by darker seawater and snow-free land, potentially warming the Earth’s climate at an even faster rate than current observational data indicates.
As with the Ayles breakout in 2005, the authorities will have to track the Ward Hunt ice carefully. Its size means it could be a hazard to shipping and offshore development in the region.

Iran to continue nuclear path: Khamenei
July 30, 2008
Iran will pursue its nuclear path, the country’s highest authority, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on Wednesday, speaking just before a deadline set by world powers in a nuclear dispute.
Western powers gave Iran two week from July 19 to respond to their offer to hold off on imposing more U.N. sanctions on Iran if Tehran would freeze any expansion of its nuclear work.
That would suggest a deadline of Saturday, although Russia, one of the six powers facing Iran, has opposed a deadline while also telling Iran not to drag its feet.
“They (the West) know that the Iranian nation is after using nuclear energy to provide electricity but they say because this work gives you capability, we will not allow it,” Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was quoted by state radio as saying.
The West accuses Iran of seeking to build nuclear warheads under cover of a civilian power program. Iran, the world’s fourth largest oil producer, denies the charge.
“The Iranian nation by depending on its useful experience and advantages of 30 years of resistance does not pay any attention to such talk and will continue with its path,” Khamenei, who has the final say in state policy, was quoted as saying.
The freeze idea is aimed at getting preliminary talks started, although formal negotiations on the nuclear, trade and other incentives will not start before Iran suspends uranium enrichment, which has both civilian and military uses.
Iran has rejected suspension in the past and has given no indication so far that it is ready for a freeze.

Syria, Israel to hold new talks next month: source
July 30, 2008
Israel and Syria will hold their next indirect peace talks in Turkey in mid-August after failing to move on to face-to-face negotiations, a source close to the talks said on Wednesday.
The fourth round of Turkish-mediated talks ended in Istanbul on Wednesday, the source said.
The long-time foes launched the talks in May but have not agreed to hold direct negotiations.
“The fourth round has ended. It was positive. The fifth round will be in mid-August, and again indirect,” said the source, who declined to be named.
The source said he also expected a sixth round in September, but did not specify whether that round would be face-to-face.
“When the process moves to direct talks it means we are very close to a solution,” the source said.
Israeli officials were not immediately available for comment. The Turkish Foreign Ministry was expected to issue a statement later in the day.
Negotiations centre on the fate of the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war. Damascus demands the return of all the Golan.
Israel, in turn, wants Syria to scale back ties with the Jewish state’s main foes — Iran, the Palestinian group Hamas and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement. Syria has so far refused to do so.

Iran Geneva talks: whose interpretation will triumph?
July 30, 2008
Was the meeting in Geneva filled with “meandering” small talk? Or did the discussions between world powers and Iran begin work on an intricately woven carpet, that in time, would yield an “elegant and durable” outcome?
The two views, the first voiced by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the second by chief Iranian nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, say much about how the two foes approached Saturday’s meeting to resolve Iran’s long-running nuclear row with the West.
It may also indicate prospects for a deal between officials from the “Great Satan” and “Axis of Evil”, who have spent so long without diplomatic ties that they have forgotten what makes the other one tick — while trust has all but vanished.
Perhaps the result of Saturday’s meeting (Iran, it was announced, did not give a clear answer to dema
nds by world powers) was clear before officials sat round the table.
Those who watched the scene in Geneva saw U.S. Undersecretary of State William Burns enter with a demeanour that did little to suggest a man who really wanted to be there.
If history was on his mind, he had little reason to be encouraged. Talks to try to get Iran to halt the most sensitive part of nuclear work, uranium enrichment, have gone nowhere since Tehran tore up a previous suspension deal with the European Union in 2005. The United States saw this as a sign Tehran was bent on producing a nuclear bomb, despite Iran’s insistence that it was just exercising its right to develop the technology needed to make electricity.
The Iranians also offered little reassurance before Jalili sat down in front of the six world powers and their representative, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana. Shortly before discussions began, an official told Reuters bluntly: “Any kind of suspension or freeze is out of the question.”
The only person by this late stage who showed any visible enthusiasm was a Swiss passerby, who when asked why all the cameras were crowding outside the talks venue, was told they were waiting for Brad Pitt. Out came the pocket camera ready for the Hollywood star, until a sheepish television producer admitted the real reason. The bystander trudged off.
Everything had seemed so much more upbeat even hours earlier. A British newspaper had reported Washington would soon announce plans to open a low-level diplomatic presence in Tehran for the first time in almost 30 years. Iran said it would consider such an idea, and was also ready for direct flights. Days earlier, Iranian newspapers were filled with debate, involving some high-level politicians, about how Iran should respond to the nuclear, trade and other incentives offered by the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China. Such unprecedented debate surely signalled a change of heart?
And so we come to the bit where neither side seems able to read the other.
What, from the U.S. side, may have been a bid to show what Iran could win from a concession, Iranians — as subsequent newspaper editorials make clear — saw as a pitifully small gesture for stopping a programme that is a symbol for many of them as a point of national pride and regional status.
Likewise, the Iranian debate that became so public, and which some in the West saw as a signal of a soul-searching, perhaps indicated the fractious nature of the Iranian leadership but said less about its willingness to switch direction.
That, say diplomats and analysts, is because it is difficult to determine whether the debate went to the heart of Iran’s leadership. Ultimate decision-making may lie with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei but he tends to look for consensus, they say. Iran’s multi-layered structure (including a national security body, a council to mediate between parliament and a constitutional watchdog, plus a clerical assembly that technically has the power throw out the supreme leader) means it is not always easy to determine the seriousness of any discussion when it does finally emerge in public.
And even if debate does go deep, there are powerful checks on any change in policy when the aim is to reach a common view among such hydra-like bodies, not to mention securing the backing of a handful of powerful politicians who have helped guide the country since the 1979 revolution.
This then helps makes sense of Jalili’s comment to an Iranian reporter, cited by the daily Etemad-e Melli, as he left Saturday’s talks: “Diplomacy is like a Iranian carpet that progresses by the millimetre. Diplomacy is also elegant and exquisite and, God willing, the outcome is beautiful, elegant and durable.”
Perhaps it’s also understandable why Jalili’s approach in Geneva did not go down well with the straight-talking U.S. administration and looked more like time wasting. As Rice put it on Monday: “I understand it was at times meandering.”
When diplomatic ties have been cut for three decades and a “wall of mistrust” has been built up — as one moderate Iranian president once put it — a deal may not come swiftly
